The Journey of Building MyBirdFinder

07/03/2026

If you’ve found your way here, welcome.

MyBirdFinder started with a simple question:

Why isn’t there a social app built specifically for birders?

There are incredible birding resources out there. We have field guides, checklists, identification tools, and community groups spread across dozens of platforms. But I kept wishing there was one place where bird lovers could simply gather, share their sightings, celebrate rare finds, and enjoy the hobby together.

So… I decided to build it.

The funny part?

I’m not a professional software developer.

Like many passion projects, MyBirdFinder began as an idea that refused to leave me alone. Nights turned into weekends, weekends turned into months, and every new feature taught me something I didn’t know the day before.

There were plenty of moments where I wondered if I’d bitten off more than I could chew.

Then someone would post a bird photo, test a feature, or send encouraging feedback, and suddenly I’d have another burst of motivation.

Built With Birders in Mind

My goal has never been to replace the amazing birding tools that already exist.

Instead, I want MyBirdFinder to complement them.

Imagine a place where you can:

  • Share your latest sightings
  • Meet birders nearby
  • Keep up with what people are seeing around the world
  • Celebrate lifers and rare species
  • Discover beautiful bird photography
  • Build friendships through a shared hobby

Whether you’ve been birding for forty years or just bought your first pair of binoculars, there’s room for you here.

Every Feature Has a Story

One thing I’ve learned while building this project is that features rarely appear overnight.

Every button, every page, every notification usually represents hours (sometimes days) of experimenting, fixing bugs, redesigning things that didn’t work, and learning entirely new technologies.

Some ideas have been scrapped.

Others have evolved into something much better than I originally imagined.

That’s part of the fun.

This Is Only the Beginning

MyBirdFinder is still growing.

There are plenty of features I’d love to add, improvements to make, and ideas waiting on the drawing board.

The best part is that many of those ideas come directly from the community.

If you’ve got feedback, feature requests, or ideas that would make birding more enjoyable, I’d genuinely love to hear them.

Building something alongside the people who use it is far more rewarding than building it alone.

Thank You

Whether you’re one of the very first users or someone who’s simply curious about what we’re creating, thank you for being here.

Every account created, every bird photo uploaded, every bug report, and every suggestion helps shape the future of MyBirdFinder.

Hopefully, years from now, we’ll all be able to look back at these early days and smile at how far we’ve come.

Happy birding.

See you out in the field.
