Spiked Cocoa, Sparkly Lights, and Why Assembly Instructions Are a Lie

12/15/2025

This weekend flew by in the best possible way! The kind that leaves you exhausted but grinning./

Brock and I finally made it back to Grapevine on Saturday, and it was every bit as magical as I’d hoped. We wandered through the holiday village downtown, bundled up against the cold, being our absolute goofiest selves and soaking in all those twinkly lights I can never get enough of.

And the treats? Oh man, we went all out. First stop: spiked hot chocolate that snuck up on us faster than we expected (dangerous and delicious; my favorite combination). Then we stumbled into this adorable vintage candy and soda shop that felt like stepping back in time.

And you guys THEY HAD BULLDOG ROOT BEER. My absolute favorite craft soda in the entire world. If you’ve never tried it, imagine that sharp, authentic sarsaparilla bite you dream about, followed by this rich, creamy vanilla finish that just lingers. It’s legitimately the nectar of the gods, and I may have done a little happy dance right there in the shop. 😅

When our legs finally gave out from all the wandering, we ducked into this cozy European dining hall for a late lunch. Fish and chips, crispy and perfect, the kind of comfort food that hits different when you’re cold and happy. The whole day? Absolutely one for the books. The kind of memory I’ll pull out on gray days when I need a little sunshine.

When I got home, it was time for the main event: decorating with the family. And listen, I forget every single year how much I despise assembling our fake tree. The branches that don’t want to fluff, the confusion over which section goes where, the inevitable moment where I’m convinced we’re missing pieces… it’s a whole ordeal. But then…

There’s something purely magical about a brightly lit tree standing in your living room, casting that warm glow across everything. And watching the kids’ faces when we finally flip that switch? That’s the real magic. Their wonder makes every frustrating minute of assembly completely worth it.

This might be a slimmer Christmas than years past, but I’m not letting that dim my sparkle. Not even a little. Because at the end of the day, it’s these moments that matter. The silly adventures, the decorated tree, the kids’ laughter echoing through the house. My family, my loved ones, all these people who fill my life with light… they’re what make Christmas real. They’re what make everything matter.

xx
